Pharma-land - the last decades – by managing partner Leendert van den Beukel

A lot has changed, yet a lot has stayed the same. Comparing the pharmaceutical industry arena of today with the landscape about one and a half decade ago you can see some shifts but the main parameters stayed the same. Visiting doctors (GP’s, specialists etc) in hospitals and & clinics and bringing the products and their characteristics to their attention. This as an educational aid to inform the medical profession on latest updates, naturally with the intention to get their “brand” promoted. Often leaving behind some free samples to offer to patients in need of the prescription medication. Nevertheless also keeping the prescribers sharp on what today’s market has to offer.

Mayor shifts were the increase in salesrep time and frequency of visits over the years as well as the number of products promoted during one visit. In early years often 1-3 products this number gradually grew to sometimes even 5-6 products. If there are different therapeutical classes involved it becomes a real challenge.  Bearing in mind that some doctors were seeing several salesreps per day this is a considerable array of themes and prescription / therapy info. However this trend has been reversed over the last few years. It is no surprise as we have seen situations where there were more reps in a doctor’s waiting room than patients. Now that can never have been the intention of it all. We now see a decrease in visits as well as time dedicated by a physician to this kind of information transfer.

Hence the industry has to look for other alternatives to get their message across. This has to take place in such a way that all parties see the benefit of it. For example nursing teams to help with patient compliance, or to support GP practices at moments where many influenza injections have to be administered; secretarial and admin support helping physicians cope with the continuously increasing administrative side of patient and practice care and authorities requiring input and many more. This change also means a shift in disciplines needed in the industry and of the kind of qualified managers sought. An increased diversity in roles like Sales Force Effectiveness, Medical Support Management, Clinical Administration Teams to name a few. Also in bringing products to market the focus has shifted. Nowadays you have Launch Readiness Managers, Sourcing and Portfolio Management and for example Post Merger Integration management.

In this changing field of we also see an increase in professional recruitment and direct search offering the different companies their recruiting services. Headhunting and Executive Search has become a different ballgame and is continuously changing too. Finding, qualifying and hiring the right talent quick and efficient to lift pharmaceutical companies to the next level in their development is has become more and more specialist work. It is a challenging task in a dynamic environment. One that keeps on changing more rapidly year on year.

Our subsidiary in Latvia previously worked under the name of SSG Baltics. A name that often created confusion among our international candidates and clients. Since the company has grown from a local recruitment service provider to an international search business within especially Pharmacy, Healthcare and FMCG sectors, the need has risen to rebrand its operations to better serve the needs of international customers.  The new company name will take away confusion of both international candidates and clients that wondered how international searches can be performed from a small country like Latvia.
